A big majority of Britons are opposed to US President George W. Bush's re-election bid, the British Times newspaper reported Wednesday, quoting a Populus poll last weekend.

According to the survey, 56 percent of the respondents said they would prefer John Kerry, the Democratic candidate for the US presidential election campaign. Only 22 percent backed Bush.

A random sample of 1,007 adults were interviewed in the poll between Friday and Monday, as the US Super Tuesday primary contests sealed the nomination of Kerry.

The poll focused on the opposition here to Bush since Kerry is little known in Britain, the paper said,

Women and Liberal Democrat supporters remain the most hostile to Bush's re-election, reflecting their strong resentment to the US-led war against Iraq, it said.
