Giants link to develop Internet for mobiles terminals

Software giant Microsoft, mobile phone leader Nokia of Finland, and British wireless operator Vodafone declared Wednesday they formed an alliance to develop websites to ease access to content for mobile terminals.

A new firm will be created to manage the web sites. It is expected to go into operation by summer 2005 in hopes of accelerating research on Internet products and services specially designed for mobile terminals and providing mobile consumers with greater ease, said Alan Harper, strategic director of Vodafone.

After acquiring a web site address, a mobile user enters it in his video mobile phone and his interlocutor will be connected on the screen, just like a videoconference, explained Didier Burdinat,director of mobility group of Microsoft France.

Six other companies would like to join the alliance. They include Group Hutchison, Orange of France, Samsung Electronics of Korea, Sun Microsystems and HP of the United States and GSM Association.
