Nam Sang-guk, former president of Daewoo Construction and Engineering Co. jumped into the Han River, reported South Korean Yonhap News Agency on Thursday.

Nam Sang-guk parked his car on the Hannam Bridge over the Han River, which runs through the capital, and jumped off around 12:50p.m.(0350 GMT), Yonhap quoted police officers as reporting.

It was not immediately confirmed whether he survived.

The apparent suicide came about one and half hours after President Roh Moo-hyun said at a news conference that Nam tried to win favors by providing money to his elder brother.

According to local reports, Roh Geon-pyeong, 62, the president's elder brother, received 30 million won (25,553 US dollars) from Nam last September in return for a favor using his family connections. The elder Roh later gave the money back to Nam late last year.

Roh Geon-pyeong said he accepted the money as present for South Korean traditional "Chusuk" (Mid-Autumn) holiday, but prosecutions deemed he received this money to help Nam seek reappointment of the President of Daewoo Construction and Engineering Co.

Nam stepped down from the president post of the company last December.
