Party officials hail state-run newspapers reform

Senior Party officials Monday urged to carry through the reform involving state-owned newspapers,at a meeting of the leading group in charge of the reform.

Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that the efforts to rectify mandatory subscription of state-owned newspapers have made marked progress, effectively relieving the financial burden of farmers and units at grass-roots level.

Liu, also a member of the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, said the progress benefiting ordinary people should be consolidated.

Measures should be taken to ensure there is no more compulsory subscription to state newspapers, said He Yong, deputy secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

Since the reform of state-owned newspapers began seven months ago, 677 government and Party newspapers have been shut down.

Besides the canceled 677 newspapers, 325 state-owned newspapers were transferred to commercial newspaper groups while 310 newspapers were separated from government departments, and 94 official journals have been converted for free distribution.

The move to forbid mandatory subscription to government and Party newspapers is mainly aimed at relieving the financial burden of farmers and units at grass-roots level.
