The total number of patent applications in China has exceeded two million since the national patent law took effect on April 1, 1985, the State Intellectual Property Office announced Wednesday.

The number of patent applications in China had jumped to one million by January 11, 2000, growing at a rate of 17.3 percent on an annual basis, office sources said.

More notably, since early 2000, the number of new applications has snowballed by 23.1 percent year on year, and hit another one million within four years.

During the past more than four years, the number of domestic invention patent applications has expanded by 38.1 percent year onyear to reach 152,000.

The fast-growing number of patent applications indicates that China's patent protection system has played an increasingly significant role in encouraging technological invention and innovation, and the awareness of property rights protection has been widely strengthened among society, experts say.
