AU to set up anti-terror center in Algeria

The African Union (AU) is going to set up an anti-terror center in Algiers, capital of Algeria, within six months, local media reported Wednesday.

The African Union (AU) is going to set up an anti-terror center in Algiers, capital of Algeria, within six months, local media reported Wednesday.

AU Commission Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare was quoted as saying the center will be charged with gathering information from all AU member states on extremist activity and facilitate the exchange of information between countries.

"We have agreed to open a center for terrorism within six months to be located in Algiers, which will coordinate informationand design a joint mechanism to fight terrorism on the continent,"he said on the sidelines of a meeting of the AU executive council here Tuesday.

The center will also serve as an early-warning mechanism on possible terror attacks on the continent, Konare said.
