More than 130 monks from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan jointly staged a Chinese Buddhist music performance in Macao Wednesday night.

This is the first time for Buddhist monks across the Taiwan Straits to jointly set up a troupe to perform the Chinese Buddhist music in Macao following their successful debuts in Taiwan last month.

"Buddhism and Buddhist music in China's mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao has the same root and preaches for harmony and peace. We hope the performance of Buddhist music will help maintain world peace and strengthen the blood ties among Chinese compatriots," said Venerable Sheng Hui, vice president of the Chinese Buddhism Association and head of the troupe.

Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region Edmund Ho Hau Wah and over 1,000 Macao people watched the show.

The troupe will continue its trip to Hong Kong where it will stage another performance Thursday night before moving on to Los Angeles and San Francisco of the United States and Vancouver of Canada on a world tour.

The monks of the troupe come from prestigious Buddhist temples including Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan, Wutai Temple in north China's Shanxi Province and Shaolin Temple in central Henan Province, representing the three branches of Buddhism in China, namely, Chinese Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism and Pali Buddhism.

Buddhist music, which originated from ancient India, found its way into China some 2,000 years ago, and after absorbing elements of traditional Chinese folk music, court music and other religiousmusic, a unique form, now called Chinese Buddhist music, came intobeing, although it has different genres.
