Suspect detained for dereliction of duty in Shanxi coal mine blast

The procuratorate of Jinzhong city in west China's Shanxi Province Thursday detained a local official held responsible for the Jiexiu coal mine blast on March 1.

The procuratorate of Jinzhong city in west China's Shanxi Province Thursday detained a local official held responsible for the Jiexiu coal mine blast on March 1.

Wang Haiqi, vice head of Jiexiu's Lianfu town, was detained andcharged with dereliction of duty for not checking the illegal production of Jinshanpo coal mine.

His negligence led to the disastrous explosion, according to the charges.

Lu Shengliang, owner of the coal mine, was detained by the police immediately after the blast, said the local police source.

Twenty-eight miners were killed and an estimated 3 million yuan(about 362,759 US dollars) was lost in the deadly coal mine gas blast in Jiexiu, caused by violations of work safety rules and illegal operations, sources said.
