Vice Premier Hui Liangyu stressed on Mar. 18 the policy of supporting and protecting agriculture, saying farmers' burdens should be further relieved through repealing taxes on special agricultural products and reducing agricultural tax rates.

Hui made the call at a national meeting on spring plowing. China's agriculture is in a crucial period of its development, and safeguarding the grain supply and increasing farmers' incomes are important tasks for the government, he said.

The spring plowing work must be smoothly conducted, he said, noting concrete measures including direct subsidies to farmers must be taken to encourage farmers to plant crops.

Hui called for guarantee of crop-growing areas, widespread use of advanced agricultural technology, enhancement of agricultural infrastructure construction, increase of fund and loan support as well as efficient price control of farm tools.

He also underlined the importance of the irrigation work and the fire prevention work.
