Arsonist sentenced to life imprisonment in south China

A farmer was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday for causing a forest fire that killed 11 people in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

A farmer was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday for causing a forest fire that killed 11 people in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Liang Zhishu was found guilty of igniting a massive fire by a cigarette but he carelessly threw away while collecting firewood in a forest on the afternoon of Jan. 3.

He tried but failed to control the fire due to strong winds andsoon left without informing anyone else, police investigation shows.

Local officials of the Maijiu township of the Yulin city began fighting the fire that afternoon, and the 11 dead were discovered the next day when the fire was under control. They included eight officials of the township government and the local forestry station, two forest rangers and a driver, sources from local government said.

The fire also destroyed about 93 hectares of forest.
