Ethnic clashes in Kosovo force some 3,600 non-Albanians to flee homes

At least 3,600 Kosovo non-Albanians have been forced to flee homes due to ethnic clashes in the Serbian province of Kosovo over the past days, the Beta news agency reported Saturday by citing a UN source.

"A majority of those displaced people are Serbs, but there are also gypsies and Ashkali," Peggy Hicks, a UN official in charge of people returning to Kosovo was quoted by the Beta as saying.

Among the displaced people, about 1,100 people have taken refuge in NATO-led Multinational peacekeepers' bases, while the others fled to Serb areas which have not been affected by the violence, she added.

In the past few days, the bloody ethnic clashes between Kosovo Serbs and ethnic Albanians have left at least 28 people dead and over 600 injured. Among the injured, there are also 61 soldiers ofthe NATO-led Multinational peacekeepers. About 110 Serbian houses as well as 25 Orthodox churches and monasteries were torched by Kosovo Albanians extremists.

A day of mourning for the victims of the violence will be observed in Serbia and Montenegro on Sunday, the Serbia-Montenegro Council of Ministers said in a statement on Saturday.

On Saturday, the situation in Kosovo is calmer than previous days, but the situation in ethnically mixed areas remains tense.
