Today is World Water Day, as well as the beginning of China Water Week. On the eve of such an occasion, Bi Xiaogang, vice director of Beijing Water Conservancy Bureau, told reporter that the city will take a series of effective measures to guarantee safe and full water supply by the year 2008.

To meet the strategic goals of "New Beijing, Great Olympics" and modernization ahead of other Chinese cities, the local authority has mapped out ten major projects regarding water conservancy. The city plans to basically modernize its water conservancy from 2003 to 2005, rebuild its Third Ring waters from 2003 to 2006 and improve water quality of rivers and lakes of the city from 2003 to 2007.

To realize the three general goals Beijing plans to kick off the following ten projects. 1.Flood prevention of the capital; 2.Emergency water supply; 3.water resources protection; 4. Guanting reservoir rebuilding; 5. Building a water-saving city; 6.Innovation of the Third Ring waters; 7.Purifying city rivers and lakes; 8.Using of rainwater and recycled water; 9.Diversion of water from the south to the north; 10. Modernization of water conservancy facilities.

After the Beijing section of south-north water diversion is completed, said Bi, an annual water supply of 300 to 500 million tons will be guaranteed beginning from 2007, which is enough to meet the water needs of a 13 million population, as well as that of the 2008 Olympic Games, so there is no need for worries in this regard.
