Light to moderate alcohol consumption, or up to one to two drinks a day, may reduce the riskof death from cardiovascular disease in men with high blood pressure, US researchers said on Monday.

Studies to date have shown moderate drink helps to cut the riskof death due to cardiovascular disease. To determine if the same was true for hypertensive patients, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and the University of Massachusetts analyzed data from 14,125 men with a history of treatment for hypertension but free of heart attack, stroke, cancer and liver disease.

Their findings, published in The Archives of Internal Medicine, found that compared with nondrinkers, weekly and daily drinkers with hypertension had a 39 percent and a 44 percent decrease in risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

The five-year study also showed that compared with nondrinkers, overall risk of death was 28 percent and 27 percent lower among weekly and daily drinkers with hypertension.

"Researchers agree that these findings need to be corroborated in other studies," Michael Gaziano, a cardiologist with Brigham and Women's Hospital and lead author of the research, said in a statement.

"However, patients with hypertension who are able to maintain light to moderate alcohol intake have no compelling reason to change their lifestyle and eliminate a possibly beneficial habit,"Gaziano and colleagues wrote in their paper.
