Incumbent Russian President Vladimir Putin was re-elected in the March 14 poll by collecting over 70 percent of the votes, Russia's Central Election Commission(CEC) announced Tuesday.

CEC Chief Alexander Veshnyakov said Putin will be sworn in on May 7, after his current term expires, the Interfax news agency reported.

"Under the law and the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the inauguration of the president is held after the powers of the previous president expire, which will happen on May 7," Veshnyakovwas quoted as saying.

According to the CEC announcement, Putin won 71.31 percent of the votes, Communist candidate Nikolai Kharitonov received over 13percent, independent nationalist candidate Sergei Glazyev got about 4 percent, independent liberal candidate Irina Khakamada garnered less than 4 percent, and ultranationalist Oleg Malyshkin earned 2 percent.

The turnout was 64.76 percent, far above the 50 percent needed to validate the vote, the CEC said.
