Nineteen students were injured with five of them in severe condition after a stampede on Mar. 24 morning in the Second Experimental Primary School in Enshi City of central China's Hubei Province.

The accident occurred when some students went downstairs for exercises during the break between classes at 10:00 a.m. while third-grade students were going upstairs, resulting in a jam in the corridor.

Some students stumbled and fell, causing many others to fall and be injured by pushing and pressing, said Zhong Zuguo, president of the primary school.

The injured students were sent to hospital immediately and by Thursday afternoon, all students injured were still under treatment in hospital, but the lives of the five severely injured are not in danger, said an official with the hospital.

All injures were caused by suffocation from being pressed.

Investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
