More than 140 suspects have been captured so far in the military operation against terrorists in South Waziristan, a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan, the Pakistani army said Thursday.

The major crackdown is continuing and no exchange of fire between the troops and the besieged militants took place on Thursday, said a press release from the army's Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

It added that those seized include both foreign terror suspects and their local supporters.

The troops have recovered a huge amount of arms and ammunition during search over the past few days, including 73 rifles, 14 heavy and small machine guns, four time bombs and huge quantity of mortar bombs, said the release.

A number of communication equipment has also been seized during the search, it said.

The ISPR also confirmed that there has been one underground tunnel marked in the cordoned area, which might signify a possible escape of certain "high valued targets" of the al-Qaida.

Negotiation between the tribal elders, representing the government, and the rounded militant is still in progress.

The 52 elders are in a bid to lobby the militant to surrender and to release the dozen of military personnel who were captured in the past encounters.

The ISPR, however, has not come out of any information on the military's overall casualty.

Meanwhile, it is yet to be confirmed whether "the high-value targets" of the al-Qaida were included in the dead or nabbed.
