Guinea-Bissau's interim president on legislative election

Guinea-Bissau Interim President Henrique Rosa has said that after experiencing severe economic hardship, the people in the west African country are sufficiently,materially and spiritually nourished to vote in the legislative election scheduled to be held on Sunday.

Guinea-Bissau Interim President Henrique Rosa has said that after experiencing severe economic hardship, the people in the west African country are sufficiently,materially and spiritually nourished to vote in the legislative election scheduled to be held on Sunday.

Rosa, in an interview with local media on Thursday, recalled comments he made after taking office last September in the wake ofa bloodless military coup that ousted president Kumba Yalla, according to a report reaching here on Friday,

Rosa warned that hungry voters could not vote freely and according to their consciences. Food shortages still persist in the impoverished west African state, but material and "psychological conditions exist for people to vote," Rosa said.

The west African country has been run by a caretaker regime since the army ousted Yalla on Sept. 14, 2003 . A national transitional council (CNT), including soldiers, has stood in for the parliament dissolved almost a year earlier, amid continued delays to legislative elections.

A total of 12 political parties and three coalitions are fielding candidates in the election, out to reposition themselves on the political map in a country of about 1.2 million people which became chronically unstable under Yalla.

The main contenders for 102 National Assembly seats are the African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde(PAIGC), which was long the sole ruling party, the ousted leader'sSocial Renewal Party (PRS), a United Platform (UP) coalition and the Social Democrat United Party (PUSD).
