WFP humanitarian aid arrives in Haiti

More than 1,500 tons of rice, beans and cooking oil, provided by the Word Food Program (WFP), arrived Friday in Haiti's northern Cap-Haitien city, reports from the capital Port-au-Prince said.

More than 1,500 tons of rice, beans and cooking oil, provided by the Word Food Program (WFP), arrived Friday in Haiti's northern Cap-Haitien city, reports from the capital Port-au-Prince said.

The food was transported in a cargo ship under the vigilance ofa French contingent of the multinational peacekeeping forces. The aid will be used by 180,000 pregnant women, nursing mothers and children.

The aid will make up for the looting of the WFP's food depositsamid the civil uprising that forced former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to step down. Jubilant residents looted some 800tons of food from the WFP warehouse when the rebels seized Cap-Haitien on Feb. 22.

Reports from the Caribbean nation said that Haiti had received eight of the 35 million US dollars of the United Nations (UN) humanitarian program. About 29 percent was donated by France.
