Education, intervention crucial for AIDS prevention in China: expert

Education and behavior intervention should be atop China's strategy on the prevention and control of AIDS, a Chinese medical expert said Saturday.

At an international workshop on the strategy of AIDS prevention and control held in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Zeng Yi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said China is currently facing a tough challenge of rising cases of AIDS and infection of HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus that causes the deadly disease.

Effective education and behavior intervention play a key role in China's campaign to rein the epidemic from further spreading, Zeng, also president of the Chinese Foundation of Venereal Diseases and AIDS Prevention, said.

As most AIDS sufferers and HIV carriers of China are in the country's rural areas, where people almost have no knowledge about the prevention of the disease and can get infected unconsciously, it is imperative to launch education and behavior intervention programs, Zeng said.

Zeng also said there is no other better choice for the prevention of AIDS at present because no effective vaccine has been developed.

Official statistics showed China now has over 840,000 HIV carriers. If not effectively controlled, Zeng said, the figure might rise to 10 million by 2010.

However, Zeng said, the figure can be controlled under three million by 2010 if active preventive measures are taken from now on.

The two-day workshop on AIDS prevention, co-sponsored by the World Health Organization and an expert team of a national biological engineering technology program of China, opened Friday and attracted over 80 participants at home and from overseas.
