UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan asked Monday the top UN security official in Iraq to resign.
The decision was made after the UN chief studied a report on security flaws leading to last year's bombing of UN offices in Baghdad.
Annan "request for the resignation of the UN Security Coordinator (Tun Myat) from the United Nations," his spokesman Fred Eckhard said.
In a statement, Annan also "request for the immediate resignation" of Ramiro Silva from his current post of Assistant Secretary-General. Silva will go back to the World Food Program and "his future assignments will not include any responsibilities for security matters."
