An editorial on the first page of People's Daily published on March 30 hails the establishment of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Commonwealth of Dominica, as of March 23, 2004.

In foreign relations, China consistently sticks to the "Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence": mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence, and on this basis sets up and develops friendly and cooperative relations with world countries.

The Chinese government supports the Dominican government's lofty cause of safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and developing national economy, and will strengthen economic, trade ties as well as economic and technological cooperation with Dominica on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

The Dominican government acknowledges that there is only one China in the world, the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal Government of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. We appreciate this stance of the Dominican government.

The normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Dominica is in the fundamental and long-term interests of the two peoples and as an important milestone in the history of relations between the two nations it is bound to push forward friendly cooperation in various fields between the two sides.

The establishment of diplomatic relations with Dominica brings the number of countries who have diplomatic ties with China to 165. Facts have proved that the "One China" policy has been widely recognized in international community and maintaining the policy has become an international consensus. Any attempt to challenge the "One China" policy runs counter to people's common will, therefore is doomed to end in failure.
