Bangladesh's main opposition the Awami League (AL) on Tuesday formed a 22 km human wall in the capital to express their "no-confidence" in the four-party alliance government.

Thousands of activists and supporters of the party with red head-band stood in one side of the 22 km road, hand in hand.

One head-band slogan read, "We don't want this government any more."

Police and party sources said the demonstration was peaceful. "There was no disturbance," police said.

AL chief and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in a statement Tuesday night that the people through the human wall demonstrated their no-confidence in the government.

AL organized the human wall to press the present government to step down from power for its "failure to run the country," she said.

"The government should resign immediately," Sheikh Hasina said, adding that the government had pushed the economy of the country to the brink of collapse through "looting, corruption and misrule."

Addressing the supporters of the party who formed the human wall, AL Secretary General Abdul Jalil asked the government to immediately step down and call mid-term polls, otherwise people will force them to quit by April 30.

The party has given a deadline to unseat the government by April 30, accusing the government of failing to crackdown on rampant crime and corruption.

The four-party alliance government, which holds two-thirds majority in the 300-seat parliament, dismissed the calls and vowedto serve out its five-year term that ends in 2006.
