43 observers to monitor election in Indonesia

Some 43 accredited foreign and local organizations will monitor the implementation of the general election this year in Indonesia, the general election commission (KPU) said in Jakarta Wednesday.

Some 43 accredited foreign and local organizations will monitor the implementation of the general election this year in Indonesia, the general election commission (KPU) said in Jakarta Wednesday.

The organizations include eight foreign groups and 35 domestic organizations, said Valina Sinka Subekti, a member of the KPU.

In addition to these organizations, some 15 foreign embassy offices in Jakarta will also monitor the implementation of the election, after having accreditation from the KPU, she said.

The foreign embassy offices included Thailand, Russia, Netherlands, the United States, South Africa, Bosnia Herzegovina, New Zealand, Britain, Canada, Japan, Australia, Bulgaria, Poland, Mali and the delegation of the European Union.

"The KPU wants as many observers as possible, " she said.

Indonesia is to hold a legislative election on April 5 and the first direct presidential election on July, 5. The second electionsince the fall of the Indonesian ousted military ruler Soeharto inMay, 1998.

There are 24 political parties qualified to contest in the elections.
