Gasoline No. 90 and 93 saw a jump in sales on March 31 after an increase in gas prices was announced.
The fuels -priced at 3.30 yuan (US$0.40) and 3.55 yuan respectively-are cheaper than the highest grade gas, No. 97, which sells for 3.80 yuan.
The Southern Metropolitan News said the price rise took most people by surprise. The hike was made according to oil prices on the international market, which hit a new record high this year.
One driver said he could save 56 yuan a month by using No. 93 and 80 yuan by using No. 90.
Experts warned the lower-grade gasoline could impair the performance of some cars.
