More UN peacekeepers arrive in Cote d'Ivoire

Twenty one peacekeepers of the UN contingent arrived in Cote d'Ivoire Thursday, Abdul Hafiz, chief officer of the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire, told Xinhua.

Twenty one peacekeepers of the UN contingent arrived in Cote d'Ivoire Thursday, Abdul Hafiz, chief officer of the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire, told Xinhua.

On Wednesday, thirty military officers and five civilian policeofficers, the first group of the UN contingent, arrived in Abidjan,the economic capital of the former French colony.

The military officers, from 19 countries such as Brazil, China,France, Kenya and Russia, would set up a headquarters to command the operation, said Hafiz.

UN Security Council Resolution 1528, unanimously adopted on Feb.27, authorized the deployment of 6,240 UN peacekeepers, including 120 staff officers, 350 police officers and 200 military observers.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Maj. Gen. Abdoulaye Fall of Senegal to lead the UN force, which includes about 1,500 West African troops already in the country trying to separate government and rebel forces.

The blue berets are to start their peacekeeping mission from Sunday.

They will patrol frontlines along with some 4,000 French troopsnow in the west African country. The French troops will not becomepart of the UN force. Their mission is authorized by the UN Security Council, but they will continue to operate independently.

More peacekeepers are expected to arrive in the next few days.
