High-level symposium opens to discuss UN reform

The Asia High-Level "Symposium on Threats, Challenge and Change" was held Friday to discuss the role and reform of the United Nations (UN), and the threats and challenges encountered by the international community, in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province.

The Asia High-Level "Symposium on Threats, Challenge and Change" was held Friday to discuss the role and reform of the United Nations (UN), and the threats and challenges encountered by the international community, in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province.

Qian Qichen, China's former vice-premier and also a member of the panel of eminent persons on UN reform and the UN role, said atthe opening ceremony that the whole world is facing new threats and challenges under the international situation. The international community should strengthen the role of the UN, maintain the authority of the UN security council, and take collective actions to counter these threats and challenges.

The UN itself should also advance with the times and carry out reasonable and necessary reform, so as to continue playing an import role in international affairs, said Qian.

The symposium, as the first regional one of the panel, was heldat the request of the panel of eminent persons on UN reform and UN's role. Participants including most members of the panel, former high-ranking officials of some Asian countries, and renowned experts and scholars will discuss three major topics, threats and challenges to the international peace and security, collective actions of the international community, and UN operation, coordination and reform.

The eminent persons panel was founded in November 2003, under UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. This team, with 16 former high-ranking officials and heads of international organizations, is responsible for analyzing the challenges to the international peace and security, and raise proposals and submit reports on suchmajor issues.
