EU to grant aid for victims of violence in Colombia

The European Union (EU) is expected to grant 8 million euros (9.6 million US dollars) to support the victims of Colombia's internal armed conflict, officials of the bloc said on April 2.

The European Union (EU) is expected to grant 8 million euros (9.6 million US dollars) to support the victims of Colombia's internal armed conflict, officials of the bloc said on April 2.

The donation will be sent "through humanitarian aid" to be handed over to the population displaced by the longest violent conflict in the Americas, that began more than 40 years ago.

The European Commissioner for Humanitarian Development and Aid Paul Nielson voiced to Colombian Vice President Francisco Santos his "deep concern" over the situation of the displaced population in the South American country and reiterated his will to continue assisting these people, the sources indicated.

The donation is to benefit 120,000 displaced Colombians with basic food, medical assistance and emergency care during the firsttrimester of their forced displacement.

Besides, the money will be used to improve the living conditions and promote social integration of around 40,000 people displaced from the most affected cities and rural areas of the strife-torn nation.

The European Union also wishes to promote the coordination and quality of the humanitarian assistance through the support of the Humanitarian Situation Chamber of the Office of the United Nationsfor Humanitarian Affairs Coordination.

Some three million Colombians were internally displaced by the violence and forced to live in precarious shelters that lack basic services such as water and hygiene while they must suffer food shortages.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees aims at improving the living conditions of nearly 30,000 refugees and Colombians who requested asylum in Ecuador, where the organism designed micro-proyects that boost integration among refugees in communities set up in this nation.
