161 arrested in anti-terror raid in Italy

The Italian Interior Ministry declared on April 2 that the Italian police arrested 161 people related to Islamic extremist organizations in a nationwide raid.

The Italian Interior Ministry declared on Friday that the Italian police arrested 161 people related to Islamic extremist organizations in a nationwide raid.

According to local reports, Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu said that the police received accurate information about possible attacks on Rome, the country's capital, under the orders from al-Qaeda.

He said that the preventative raid was conducted in 12 of the 20 regions in Italy.

Pisanu said that the police would interrogate the arrested, mostly Moroccans, to decide whether to bring charges against them.

Since Spain was attacked allegedly by terrorists on March 11, Rome has raised alert and conducted several anti-terror actions.
