Myanmar registers 246 drug-related cases in February

Myanmar
registered a total of 246 narcotic-drug-related cases in February this year, The New Light of Myanmar reported on April 3.
The army, police and the customs seized 37.66 kg of heroin and 55.58 kg of opium as well as over 39,600 tablets of stimulant drugs in the month.
And 322 people, including 265 men and 57 women were punished for involvement in those drugs cases, said the official newspaper.
According to official statistics, Myanmar saw a total of over 2,760 drug-related cases in 2003 and 3,848 people were arrested. Drug haul during the year included 568 kg of heroin and 1,481.5 kg of opium, 156.25 kg of morphine, 85.2 kg of marijuana and 307.9 kg of ephedrine as well as 4 million tablets of stimulant drugs.
Also in the year, seven opium refineries were destroyed in the northern Shan state of the country.
In an effort to eradicate drugs in the country, the government destroyed a total of 2,558 hectares of illegally grown opium poppy plantations in four states and divisions including Shan state during the 2003-04 poppy cultivation season up to February.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) quoted Wednesday's report of the International Narcotics Control Board for 2003 as saying that Myanmar's opium poppy cultivated area dropped 24 percent to 62,200 hectares in 2003 from 81,400 hectares in 2002.
The UNODC survey also revealed that the potential opium production in Myanmar fell 2 percent to 810 tons in 2003 from 828 tons in 2002.
