A number of Chinese legislators have called for severe punishments against lawbreaking hospitals, disease control centers and blood collection institutions, as well as medical staff involved, in a bid to curb illegal activities that may cause the spread of contagious diseases.

The legislators made this call at the ongoing meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) during discussions on the amendments to the law on control of infectious diseases.

The 77th-90th clauses of the amendments define the legal responsibilities of local governments at different levels and medical institutions concerned.

Some of the legislators suggested that the sum of penalties be increased, while some others held that those who have engaged in illegal activities should not only pay penalties but also be held responsible for their civil or criminal responsibilities.
