UN secretary-general arrives in Moscow

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Moscow on Sunday for a three-day official visit during which he is expected to discuss the Russian-UN cooperation on the international arena.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Moscow on Sunday for a three-day official visit during which he is expected to discuss the Russian-UN cooperation on the international arena.

Moscow "will continue to make a weighty contribution in increasing the authority and effectiveness of the UN Security Council as a key component for forming the current collective security system," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko while commenting on Annan's current visit, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.

During the talks the two sides "will exchange views on strengthening the legal framework of peacekeeping activities underthe UN Charter and UN Security Council decisions," he noted.

He expressed confidence that Annan's visit is expected to give a fresh impetus to his constructive and close dialogue with Russia's authorities.

Meanwhile, Yakovenko called for a bigger UN role in Kosovo unrest and Iraq rebuilding.

Russia is also expected to discuss its continuing role in providing humanitarian and emergency assistance under the UN aegis,Itar-Tass quoted Yakovenko as saying.

Russia is one of five veto-wielding permanent members of the UNSecurity Council.
