Poll opens in Indonesia's general election

Polls began Monday in Indonesia's general election, with more than 147 million people in the country eligible to vote.

Polls began Monday in Indonesia's general election, with more than 147 million people in the country eligible to vote.

Voting stations opened at 7 am local time Monday (2200 GMT Sunday) in the easternmost province of Papua, provincial election official Hasyim Sangaji was quoted as saying by local media.

In central regions of the world's largest archipelago, which covers three time zones, voting will begin at 0080 am local time (2300 GMT Sunday). Polling stations in Java and Sumatra will open at 9 am local time.

Polls close at 0010 pm local time across the country.
