Golkar party temporarily leads in Indonesia's legislative election

Golkar, the second biggest party in Indonesia held the top position in Monday's legislative polls by obtaining 363,356 votes or 18.42 percent of the total votes, the General Election Committee (KPU) announced in Jakarta Tuesday.

Golkar was followed by the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chaired by President Megawati Soekarnoputri which got 362,862 votes or 18.39 percent of the total.

And the newly-formed Democratic Party, which planned to nominate former Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as its presidential candidate won 238,259 votes or 12.07 percent of the total.

The top three were followed by the Justice and Prosperous Party (PKS) with 237,783 votes, or 12.05 percent; the Nation Awakening Party 211,189 votes or 10.7 percent; the United Development Party 134,002 votes or 6.79 percent; and the National Mandate Party 126,148 votes or 6.4 percent.

The PDI-P and the Golkar party were receiving the most votes inpolls overseas, said Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda.

He said that the PDI-P was on the first position, followed by the Golkar party, the National Mandate Party and the Democrat Party.

The legislative election determines the possibility of political parties to nominate their presidential candidates, in which the committee requires at least 3 percent of the total votes.

Indonesia is set to hold the first direct presidential electionon July 5.

President Megawati, the former coordinating minister and Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly Amien Rais are the top three runners.
