Toshiba Corporation announced Tuesday it had produced the world's first 4-gigabit NAND flash memory.
Fabricated with 90 nanometer process technology, the new chip offers double the capacity of Toshiba's current largest single-die NAND flash memory, and will realize higher capacity flash memory cards capable of supporting a wide range of applications, the company said.
Toshiba plans to put on market sample products this month at the price of 12,000 yen (113 US dollars) a unit. Mass production is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year with a monthly capacity of 300,000 units.
At the same time, Toshiba introduced an 8Gb flash memory by combining two 4Gb ones in a single package. A sample of 16 Gb flash memory would be available in the third quarter of this year.
NAND flash memory offers high density, nonvolatile data retention and is widely used in flash memory cards and as embedded memory in digital consumer products, such as digital still cameras, personal digital assistant (PDA), and multifunction cell phones.
