Japan resumes import of cooked poultry meat from China

Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Wednesday announced the resumption of cooked poultry meat imports from China, according to sources with the China National Regulatory Commission for Certification and Accreditation.

China exported cooked poultry meat worth 510 million US dollars in 2003, 426 million of which was to Japan. On Jan. 27, 2004, Japan announced it banned poultry imports from China following China's confirmation of bird flu case.

On March 16, China's Ministry of Agriculture announced the ending of isolation in the last two bird flu-hit areas in the country, thus putting an end to the 49-day campaign over the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu.

A delegation from Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries came to China in March to examine 35 cooked poultry meat enterprises, and before that, representatives from China's State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine went to Japan to discuss the issue with the Japanese side.
