Kerry calls Iraq situation great failure of Bush policy

US Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on Wednesday called the situation in Iraq a "mess" and great failure of diplomacy and judgment by the Bush administration.

US Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on Wednesday called the situation in Iraq a "mess" and great failure of diplomacy and judgment by the Bush administration.

"They're doing it in such a frankly inept way," he said in an interview with the Cable News Network. "The president needs to step up and acknowledge that there are difficulties and that the world needs to be involved, and they need to reverse their policy."

Earlier, in an interview with American Urban Radio Networks, Kerry said the Iraq situation represented "one of the greatest failures of diplomacy and failures of judgment that I have seen inall the time that I've been in public life."

"Since I fought in Vietnam, I have not seen an arrogance in ourforeign policy like this," the Vietnam War veteran said.

Kerry voted for a congressional resolution in 2002 authorizing President George W. Bush to use force against Iraq, but has since slammed his administration of not seeking international help before going to war.

Nearly three dozen American soldiers were killed since weekend in a new round of insurgency by supporters of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein or Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Wednesday the situation in Iraq was serious but US troops were still in control.
