Spanish King proposes Rodrigues Zapatero for prime minister

The Spanish King Juan Carlos I proposed on Wednesday to the Congress that the Socialist leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero act as the next prime minister of the country. , who won the March 14 general elections.

The Spanish King Juan Carlos I proposed on Wednesday to the Congress that the Socialist leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero act as the next prime minister of the country. , who won the March 14 general elections.

King Juan Carlos I informed president of the Congress of Deputies, Manuel Marin, of his proposal and the lawmakers are expected to hold a debate on his candidacy on April 15 or 16.

In his capacity as head of state, the king proposes the futurechief of government who is usually the leader of the party that has won the elections.

Before he made the proposal, Juan Carlos I had consulted with leaders of different parties who won seats in the parliament. The leaders voiced their support for Rodriguez Zapatero to succeed current Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar of the Popular Party (PP) and take charge in forming the next Spanish government.

In the wake of the bombings that hit Madrid and killed 191 people and wounded 1,450 on March 11, Rodriguez Zapatero pledged his government would take anti-terror fight as its main task.
