The German government rejected Wednesday claims that German secret services should be blamed for false information on Iraqi bio-chemical weapons program.

Thomas Steg, the deputy spokesman for the German Chancellory, called such claims "irresponsible."

According to a recent report in the Los Angels Times, the United States belief that the pre-war Iraq possessed bio-chemical weapons was essentially based on information from BND, or the German Intelligence Service.

In his appearance before the UN Security Council last February,US Secretary of State Colin Powell accused Iraq of possessing bio-chemical weapons by displaying pictures of alleged mobile chemicallabs.

Steg said that the US government acquired information from different sources and to his knowledge, had not relied exclusivelyon German intelligence.
