Ugandan coffee export to China to soar

Uganda's coffee export to China may increase largely by June this year spurred by the opening of a coffee shop in Beijing in 2002, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) has said.

Uganda's coffee export to China may increase largely by June this year spurred by the opening of a coffee shop in Beijing in 2002, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) has said.

Henry Ngabirano, UCDA managing director, was quoted on Thursday by The New Vision as saying that the China venture first received 20 tons of Ugandan coffee in 2002, but has since grown to 110 tons in less than two years.

"In two years, we have grown from zero to 110 tons, and I know 60 tons more are on their way to China through private entrepreneurs. By June this year it may be almost 200 tons," he said.

In the last two years, Uganda began to add value to coffee exports and the first step is the establishment of the Beijing China Coffee Company, Ngabirano said.

"In some countries like China, we are still teaching them how to consume coffee, and we are still learning their business cultures," the managing director said.
