The Argentine government Thursday claimed its "sovereign rights over the Malvinas Islands" in response to a British official protest.

Britain lodged a protest on March 25, urging Argentina to explain why the Almirante Irizar, an Argentine icebreaker ship, entered the Malvinas "exclusive zone," which they claimed as part of their colonies in southern Atlantic.

The icebreaker was carrying out "security tasks in the navigation and identification of fishing ships," while sailing near the Malvinas islands, local press quoted a Thursday report ofArgentine Foreign Ministry as saying.

The report said the ship was intercepted while operating "in the exclusive economic zone" in mid-March.

The Malvinas islands, called the Falklands by Britain, are located in southern Atlantic near the Argentine coast. In 1982, the two countries fought a brief war over the sovereignty of the islands, which are currently under British rule.

Argentina does not recognize the "exclusive zone" marked in 1994 by Britain.
