Guangzhou will invest a total of 2.3 billion yuan (US$277m) to lay liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipelines to receive the first natural gas supplies for residents in 2006.

The Guangzhou Gas Company plans to spend 220m yuan this year to upgrade facilities and build 100km of new pipelines. LNG will gradually replace liquefied petroleum gas, according to a plan recently published by the citys government. By 2010, LNG will be supplied to most users in urban Guangzhou and the entire city area by 2015.

Commercial users will also convert to LNG which is the cleanest energy in the world today. Pollution is reduced by 75 percent of that caused by burning liquid petroleum gas and 99 percent of pollution caused by burning coal.
