Top US governor in Iraq Paul Bremersaid Friday US marines had suspended offensive operations in the Sunni town of Fallujah at midday.

The move was aimed to facilitate humanitarian access and try toinitiate talks with Iraqi insurgents, Bremer told reporters.

"As of noon today coalition forces have initiated a unilateral suspension of offensive operations in Fallujah to allow for a meeting between members of the Governing Council, local Muslim leadership and the leadership of anti-coalition forces," Bremer said.

He said US forces would also allow the relevant Iraqi ministries to deliver aid and other supplies and permit residents of Fallujah to attend to their wounded and dead.

He did not say how long the cease-fire would last in the town.

US marines have been battling insurgents in the western Iraqi town for the past six days.
