The Spanish Defense Ministry said Friday that the Spanish peacekeeping forces deployed in Iraq did not participate in any joint missions with the US troops on Friday.

A spokesman for the defense ministry made the remarks after Qatar's TV network Al Yazira reported that Spanish and US troops intercepted a caravans belonging to Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada Al Sadr.

The spokesman added that the situation in Najaf and Diwaniya, where the bases of the Spanish-led multinational Plus Ultra Brigade was stationed, was of "tense calmness."

The Plus Ultra Brigade was forced to step up security measures at its bases after being attacked by Shiite radical groups in the past several days.

Javier Diaz Duran, a Spanish soldier of the Plus Ultra Brigade, was seriously wounded in an attack Thursday night when his armoredvehicle was patrolling in Diwaniya.
