China is to launch a nationwide crackdown from April to September against drug trafficking, aiming to smash drug rings and their trafficking networks and to retrievemoney involved in drug deals.

Luo Feng, Vice Minister of Public Security, said Friday at a teleconference that the five-month campaign would mainly target drug crimes in southwest China's Yunnan Province, the most important path through which drugs from the Golden Triangle sneak into China continuously.

The notorious triangle, an area along the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos where production flourishes, produces 70 to 80 tons of heroin annually and 80 percent is smuggled to China overland along the Sino-Myanmar border.

"China will further promote its anti-drug cooperation with Myanmar, the Republic of Korea (ROK), Japan and the Philippines, in a bid to mop up cross-border drug gangs and overseas productionbases," Luo said.

The ministry will also strengthen investigation and retrieval of illegal property and profits of drug barons and fight harder against drug-related money laundering during the campaign.

In addition, all local police departments are urged to target traffickers in public places of entertainment. "Entertainment places involving rampant drug deals will be closed down and their bosses will get severe punishment," Luo said.

During the former anti-drug campaigns focusing on Yunnan as well as eastern Guangdong and Fujian provinces along the coast last year, the police uncovered 4,200 drugs-related cases, arrested 27,000 suspects, demolished 13 drug factories, and seized4.15 tons of heroin, 0.44 tons of "ice", or methamphetamine, and 173,600 ecstasy pills.
