US destroyer visits Malaysia's Port Klang

USS Cushing, the US destroyer, arrived at Port Klang, some 50 km west of Kuala Lumpur,on Sunday for a four-day goodwill visit.

During their stay there, the vessel's crew will participate in community projects including at a shelter home in Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday.

USS Cushing, commissioned on Sept. 21, 1979, is the 23rd Spruance-class destroyer designed and built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

With its home port in Yokosuka, Japan, the USS Cushing is assigned as a commander for the Destroyer Squadron Fifteen.

The vessel is equipped with two Seahawk aircraft and sophisticated armaments such as MK46 torpedoes, Harpoon missile launchers, a Sea Sparrow launcher and a Rolling Airframe Missile system.

On Feb. 3 this year, Blue Ridge, the warship at the United States Seventh Fleet visited the West Port of Port Klang for a routine call.

The US-Malaysia relations have been improved since Abdullah Ahamd Badawi became the country's prime minister on Oct. 31, 2003.Recently the US administration has agreed to provide a military aid of 1.5 million US dollars to the Southeast Asian country.
