At least 427 people were killed and more than 2,000 wounded in Central America during the Holy Week, police sources and medical organizations in different countries confirmed on Monday.
The casualties were mostly caused by accidents, homicides and other violent incidents from April 2 to 11, when Christians remember the death of Christ and his return to life.
El Salvador topped the list of fatal victims with 131 killed and more than 1,600 wounded, most of them in violent acts. Guatemala followed with 104 killed and over 200 wounded.
At least 95 people were killed and more than 100 wounded in Nicaragua. Among the dead, 41 were drowned while playing on the shore, 26 were killed in traffic accidents and another 28 died in murders, homicides and suicides.
Honduran authorities estimated 46 people were killed and about 100 wounded. In Costa Rica and Panama, a total of 51 people were killed.
In South America, 135 were killed in traffic accidents in Venezuela during the Holy Week.
