China's Sun offered 10,000 US dollars to show up in London Marathon

Chinese distance star runner Sun Yingjie, second best women's marathon mark holder, has been offered an appearance fee of 100,000 U.S. dollars to show up in the London Marathon later this month.

Sun, who chalked up 2 hours, 19 minutes and 48 seconds at lastyear's Beijing Marathon, said it will be her first time to be offered such high appearance fee for an international marathon.

"It will be my first oversea marathon in my career. But I am not in a good form now. I don't think I can run anywhere close to my personal best,"said Sun, who injured her collar bone last December and recovered her normal training only two month ago.

Sun, world championships 5,000m bronze medalist in Paris last year, showed a poor form last Sunday at the Beijing international relay marathon, finishing the 10 kilometer leg in 33 minutes and 48 seconds, almost four minutes slower than her last year's time.

"My goal this season is to win a medal better than the bronze at the Olympics this summer. I have qualified for all the three events -- 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon. I want to run the 5,000m and 10,000m, but my coach has different idea," the 23-year-old said.

Wang Dexian, Sun's coach, wants to make the final decision after the London Marathon. "I need to see who will register the Olympic marathon race. If Sun faces strong challengers in marathon,I think she'd better shift to the shorter distances.

"But I believe if Sun wants to land a medal in the 10,000m, sheat least needs to break the 30-minute barrier," the coach added.

Sun is the only medal hopeful in the women's track events for China at the coming Olympics. "my dream is to win a gold medal at the Olympics, if this goal cann't be fulfilled this year, I hope it can become true at the Beijing Olympics in 2008," Sun said.
