Turkey opposes delay of referenda on Annan plan on Cyprus
font size

To delay the simultaneous referendain Cyprus is against the framework drawn up by the Annan plan, Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Namik Tan said on Wednesday.

Tan told the weekly press briefing that the basic philosophy of the Annan plan was to found a new partnership in Cyprus and let it enter the European Union (EU) on May 1 as united.

The roadmap initiated for Cyprus in New York and continued in Buergenstock, Switzerland, was in practice at the moment, Tan said, adding that Turkey would fulfil its commitments and responsibilities during the solution process.

"It is our most natural right to expect concerned parties to fulfil their responsibilities in the same way," Tan said.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan presented his final plan to the parties at the end of Cyprus negotiations in Buergenstock on March 31.

The plan will be put to simultaneous referenda in the two sides of Cyprus on April 24.

Greek Cypriot communist AKEL party made a call last week to the United Nations to delay the referenda months later.
