font size

The United States may order non-essential U.S. diplomats and the family members of all employees of the U.S. embassy and consulates to leave Saudi Arabiabecause of potential terrorist threats, U.S. officials said on Thursday.

"The U.S. government continues to receive credible indications of terrorist threats aimed at American and Western interests in Saudi Arabia, including the targeting of diplomatic and other official facilities and residential compounds in Riyadh," said theU.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia in a message to U.S. citizens in the country.

U.S. State Department officials, however, stressed that they are just considering the possibility of a withdrawal and no decision had been made yet.

Terrorist threats have forced the United States to recall its diplomats in Saudi Arabia twice over the past year.
