The British Ministry of Defense (MoD) said on Wednesday that four British soldiers were injured in an explosion in the Basra area of southern Iraq.

"We can confirm four British injuries, two of whom are serious," a spokesman for the ministry told reporters.

The soldiers were hurt after a blast hit a police academy on Wednesday at Zubair near Basra, the ministry said.

The blast were among a series of explosions occurred on Wednesday in the British-controlled Basra area that reportedly have killed at least 60 people and injured many more.

Earlier reports quoted a British military spokesman in Iraq as saying that three explosions hit three police stations in Basra and a fourth tore through a police academy where the four British soldiers got hurt.

The blasts were thought to have been caused by car bombs.
